The Ultimate Hamilton-Colgate Rivalry
The Ross family lives outside Minneapolis where Angela works as an orthodontist and her husband Scott, a graduate of Colgate, is a dermatologist. When it came time for the Ross' oldest child to look at colleges, both Hamilton and Colgate rose to the top of the list. "Lexi was really torn," Angela recalls, "she liked them both, but ended up picking Colgate. She's very happy there." The playing field leveled, however, when son Matt concluded his college search this spring. He will join the Hamilton Class of 2013 in January after spending a semester abroad in London. "Matt was so excited when he was accepted that he immediately changed the background photo on my cell phone to a picture of Hamilton," Angela said. Their youngest child, Zach, is a high school sophomore. The verdict is still out on which colleges he'll consider, but Angela would not be disappointed if he tipped the scale in the Ross household in favor of Hamilton. "Scott and I both had great college experiences, and both Hamilton and Colgate are excellent schools," said Angela, who serves as reunion planning chair for the Class of 1979. "Of course we have a subtle competition in our family, but we keep it friendly. Both of my boys play lacrosse so we're always watching how Colgate and Hamilton teams do." Angela and Scott volunteer for their respective alma maters having hosted receptions for new students from the Minneapolis area at their home for August send-off receptions. Angela also interviews prospective Hamilton students from northern Minnesota. Both support their colleges with gifts to the Annual Fund, but the stakes are higher for the Hamilton-Colgate Challenge — if Hamilton wins (and Angela is confident it will!), Scott has agreed to cook her a five-course gourmet meal; in the unlikely event that Colgate comes out on top, Angela will be donning the chef's hat. "All I can say to my fellow Hamilton alumni is — make your gift today!" |
