No matter how comfortable it is in the microcosm on the Hill, there is still a necessity for off campus exploration from time to time. From Where I Sit: Whitebean '08 Reflects on Working with Utica Refugeesby Kateri Whitebean '08The hours I have spent in the classroom combined with the service hours I have put in at the BOCES Utica ACCESS site have greatly increased my awareness of other cultures, especially those represented within my immediate community. I have been a language tutor in Project SHINE (Students Helping in the Naturalization of Elders) in previous semesters; however, the structure of the ESOL class and the attention given to particular exercises and strategies to use as a tutor have become extremely valuable.
