Hamtrek is back

by: Hathaway Burden '10

As many students prepare for the festivities of Class and Charter Day, another group of students has been training hard for the annual Hamtrek. On Friday, May 9 at 2:30 p.m. the gun will go off signaling the fifth annual triathlon. The race, which can be completed as an individual or a team, includes a 525 yard swim, a 9 mile bike race and a 3.1 mile run.
The triathlon attracts a number of different participants from students and alumni to faculty and staff. Last year there were about 110 participants.  The top time went to Ben Delia '05, as he finished the course in just under 53 minutes.  His time was almost three minutes faster than any other entry in the field.
Currently there are close to 100 registered racers, but Dave Thompson, director of Hamtrek, hopes that an additional 50-70 participants will sign up in the next week. Registration, available at http://www.hamilton.edu/hamtrek/registration.html,closes Tuesday, May 6.
An exciting addition to this year's Hamtrek is the use of an official company for timing. Score-This, which runs triathalons far larger than Hamtrek, will oversee the event and do official timing.
Prizes will be awarded not only to the top individuals and teams, but also for the team with the best costumes. All participants, regardless of finishing time, will be given a t-shirt in addition to other great prizes. If you aren't interested in racing, join the Ham-Trek racers for food, music, games performances or come to cheer the racers on!
