Sheridan Memorial Chicken Wing Eating Contest

Ezra Rosenberg '10

On Thursday October 4th friends of the late Andrew Sheridan '09 will host the first Annual Andrew Sheridan '09 Memorial Wing Eating Contest in conjunction with the HAVOC executive board.  Sheridan died suddenly while playing soccer during winter recess of last year.
Among his many passions at Hamilton, Sheridan was an avid volunteer for the Cornhill Youth Soccer Program in Utica, which is run through HAVOC. The Cornhill Program provides a soccer league for underprivileged Utica children. All equipment for the league is funded entirely through charitable donations, and the coaching and mentoring is on an entirely volunteer basis. Sheridan was a volunteer coach  for the program both of his years on the hill.
Sheridan's service to the Cornhill league, coupled with his passion for chicken wings, inspired his friends to honor his memory with an annual wing eating contest, the proceeds of which will go the the Cornhill program
The event will serve to keep Sheridan's memory alive by benefiting a program that, as an accomplished athlete, he loved dearly.
The event is being coordinated by Matt Chuff '08, who explained that the proceeds will go toward "New goals, nets, cones for practice, and other assorted practice equipment." The friends of Sheridan and the HAVOC Executive Board have received generous financial assistance from the Dean of Student's Office and the President's Office.
The contest will be held in Tolles Pavilion. Doors will open at 7 p.m. and the contest will begin promptly at 7:30 p.m. The entry fee is five dollars for students and professors.  The contest will be capped at 90 entries, so prospective conteststants are urged to get there early. Admission is free for spectators, but, as Chuff explained, "donations at the door will be much appreciated."
The contest will feature an elimination round followed by a final round. The sponsors have purchased 22,000 medium wings for the contest from New York Pizza & Deli (NYPD) in New Harford, NY. Soda and water will be provided for the contestants. The top three finishers in the contest will win prizes. The winner will receive a trophy.
A second event will take place around the corner at the Glen House from 5:30 p.m. until dark. This event will also be soccer themed.  A soccer goal will be defended by a host of Hamilton administrators, including Dean of Students Nancy Thompson and Assistant Dean of Students Phil Klinkner. Students will be able to take shots on goal for 50 cents a shot.
A raffle open to everyone on campus will be held in conjunction with the wing-eating contest. Prizes, such as dinner at Alteri's Restaurant, have been donated by a number of vendors in the Clinton community.  Tickets will be on sale Monday through Thursday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the Beinecke Events Barn. The raffle drawing will take place after the awarding of the trophy to the wing-eating champion Thursday night.
This event means a great deal to the friends of Sheridan and they intend to keep his memory alive by hosting an event true to his spirit and passions. Chuff explained, "We want to keep everyone mindful of everything Sheridan did for the community and the type of person he was."
Friends are also hopeful that the Cornhill Youth Soccer Program will eventually be named after Sheridan.
The event will last until roughly 8:30 p.m. Any questions regarding the event shoudl be directed to Chuff (mcuff@hamilton.edu.)
