About UsStudent Assembly 2008The Hamilton College Student Assembly is split into three branches: the Central Council, the Judicial Board, and the Honor Court. Typically, both the Judicial Board and the Honor Court are called by their traditional names. The Central Council however, is often referred to as the Student Assembly. The Student Assembly meets every Monday night at 9PM in ELS. Each class is represented by 7 officers (president, secretary-treasurer, and 5 representatives), but any member of the Hamilton community is welcome to attend and voice his or her opinion. The primary task of the Student Assembly is to fund student organizations. The Student Assembly gets its budget from a portion of each student's Student Activity fee. Student groups submit budget proposals to the Student Assembly Treasurer, who reviews each proposal with the funding committee (comprised of the secretary-treasurers from each class year). The funding committee comes to an agreement over each proposal and then submits its recommendation to the entire assembly for discussion and voting. The other task of the Student Assembly is to act as an effective liaison between students, faculty, and the administration. Barely a meeting goes by without student concerns being brought to the attention of the assembly, either by members themselves, or through guest speakers. These concerns are then relayed to their respective audiences, and a great process of cooperation and compromise follows suit. Past success stories of this process include the new Hill Card system and weekend hours for the Health Center. Student Assembly elections are held every year in the spring (with the exception of freshman elections which happen early in fall and the assembly President/Vice-President elections which happen at the end of the fall semester). Emails will be sent out to the entire campus body in advance of the elections to solicit candidates. We encourage anyone who is interested to run. If you have any questions regarding the workings of the Student Assembly please email sa@hamilton.edu or come to one of our weekly meetings in ELS. |
