The Art Department Digital Lab features professional class hardware and a robust network infrastructure, specifically designed to handle the rigors of multimedia authoring. The lab houses 12 Apple iMacs with 3.06 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo Processors, 4GB RAM, 500GB Hard Disk, SuperDrive (CD-RW/DVD-RW), Gigibit Ethernet (10/100/1000BASE-T), NVIDIA GeForce 8800GS Graphics Card, 24" Display and operate on Mac OS X.
There are two EPSON large-format printers. Each EPSON Stylus Pro 4800 has the capability of 1440 x 720 dpi, 8-Color ultrachrome ink (3-black) and can print at 17" wide roll media. There is also a HP medium format laser black-and-white printer.
To support student research the lab offers two EPSON Expression 10000 large-format scanner, a Nikon Super Coolscan 5000ED film scanner, a Nikon Super Coolscan 9000ED film scanner, three SONY HDV GVHD700 (portable mini-DV deck), and five Plantronics DSP-400 USB headset/microphones. Students also have access to Panasonic AG-DVC20P Mini-DV (digital video) cameras, Panasonic PV-GS500 mini-DV cameras, Nikon P5100 digital still cameras, Canon EOS Rebel T1i SLR digital cameras and M-audio recorders that are available on loan.
Our infrastructure is supported by Apple Xserve, dual 1 GHz PowerPC G4 processors w/ 1 GB Ram, 480 GB internal RAID, 1.8 TB external RAID and 2GB network connection. We have a fiberoptic connection to Hamilton's network core and gigabit ethernet connections on Apple workstations.
To complement its hardware, the digital lab features entry-level and professional-level multimedia authoring applications, based on the QuickTime media architecture such as Microsoft Office, Mozilla Firefox and Safari. We regularly utilize the following programs such as QuickTime Pro, iLife: iPhoto, iTunes, iMovie, iDVD, Garage Band, iWeb, Final Cut Pro, DVD Studio Pro, Motion, LiveType, Compressor ProTools, Sound Studio, Soundtrack, Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Dreamweaver, Flash, VR Worx, LaserSoft SilverFast, Toast Titanium, Google Earth and Inspiratation.
Tools such as a table saw, band saw, drill press, chop saw and bench sander are housed in our mixed media sculpture studio. To compliment our this equipment we are also outfitted with large work tables and additional work benches for students to utilize manual hand tools such as a hand drill, dremel tool, jigsaw and a saws all. The sculpture area also houses a heavily ventilated casting studio for materials such as plaster, concrete, wax and plastic. This studio has spacious work benches and offers a great view with nice light.
Our spacious well-lit ceramic studio is comprised of four rooms with large work tables, equipment such as a slab roller, extruder and a powerful spray booth. Our clay mixing room houses a Soldner mixer and ventilation unit. The glaze area provides a wide array of underglazes, glazes and raw materials for low fire surface treatments. The electric kiln room houses five electric computer and manual controlled kilns. Additionally, the hot shop houses three large Bailey gas kilns.
The Art Department painting studio houses 18 high quality adjustable easels, vertical storage painting racks for works in progress, individual palate storage for students, and a turpentine collection and recycling unit. The studio has a wonderful view and provides great natural light.
Black and White Darkrooms
The Art Department houses a traditional black and white introductory darkroom with nine 23CIII Beseler enlarger workstations. The advanced darkroom has four 23CIII Beseler enlarger workstations and one 45 Beseler enlarger workstation. The studio utilizes tray processing with the ability to print 16"x20" RC or Fiber based silver gelatin prints. We have generous drying rack space as well as a 20"x24" Seal Commercial 210 M dry mount press. A spacious light table is available to view negatives as well as a Rototrim Pro 24" cutter for finished prints. Two 4 x 5 cameras, Tungsten lighting kits, Vivitar flashes, ambient flash meters and various tripods are available for student use.
