Three Juniors Spend Semester at New England Center for ChildrenMay 9, 2007 Three Hamilton juniors have spent the spring semester participating in the Hamilton-New England Center for Children (NECC) Cooperative Educational Program, in Southborough, Mass. Sociology concentrator Amanda Iturbe and psychology concentrators Jennifer Franco and Katherine Ribble have worked directly with children with autism or other developmental disabilities, while taking advanced courses in applied behavior analysis. Jen Sadowsky '08 Spends Semester at NECCShe Reports "Teaching Children with Autism Is Rewarding"September 25, 2006 Jen Sadowsky is spending the fall of her junior year in the Cooperative Education Program between Hamilton and the New England Center for Children (NECC). She recently described her duties as a participant in the program, "At the New England Center for Children, I am currently working with nine kids (ages 7-12) diagnosed with autism and other pervasive developmental disorders. Many of them have severe communication and social deficits, and some are completely non-verbal. We deal with a lot of challenging behaviors and constantly use positive reinforcement to reward the kids for doing their work and having good behavior." More ... Vinny Strully '69, and the New England Center for Children (NECC), where he is executive director, were featured in a segment on CBS Evening News with Katie Couric on Dec. 19. The New England Center for Children, in Southborough, Mass., is a private, nonprofit autism education center dedicated to bringing out human potential and creating productive lives for children with autism. The news clip is related to the bill to finance autism research (Combating Autism Act S. 843) that was signed by President George W. Bush. News reporter Sharyn Alfonsi visited NECC to look deeper into the school designed specifically to educate children diagnosed with autism. |
