II. PROGRAM FEATURES
Field Experience
- Three-week field study in different parts of China. Logistical on-site support provided by ACC and local Chinese education agencies & NGOs. Tentative locations for FS summer 2009: Sichuan and Guangxi.
- Engage in a comparative study of U.S. and China's contemporary society and educational systems through hands-on projects.
- Focus on education in rural areas.
- Each student develops an educational development project & receives faculty support to execute the project. When applying to the program, a project proposal must be submitted. This proposal details the student's educational experiences and ideas for the educational development project. (Sample proposals: #1, #2, #3)
- Each student presents their project at two conferences/workshops for Chinese school teachers
- The Education and Science Society (ESS) is a co-sponsor of the education conferences in China where students present their projects. ESS is an NGO with over 20 years of experience in promoting quality of education in rural China.
- Teach at two day camps in rural schools.
- Travel to cultural sites & rural schools.
- Participate in a 1-week deorientation and preparation for outreach activities.

Advanced Language Instruction
- Three-week intensive Chinese language courses & culture lectures about China in Beijing.
- Focus on advanced language & culture studies, including: grammar, discourse & lexical development, and conversation & presentation skills.
- Native-speaking faculty with extensive experience teaching foreign students.
- Earn 2 undergraduate credits from Hamilton College.

Outreach Activities
- Upon returning to the U.S., participants are strongly encouraged to share their field experiences in China with their home community, local public schools and college communities.

III. SCHOLARSHIPS
With generous funding from the Henry Luce Foundation and the U.S. Dept. of Education Fulbright-Hays GPA program, the ACC will award full scholarships to highly-qualified U.S. undergraduate or graduate students.
Full scholarship includes:
- International travel
- Program tuition *
- Domestic travel
- Lodging in China
*After acceptance into the program, participants (even those on scholarship) will need to submit a non-refundable deposit of $300 to hold their spot in the program.
Eligibility
- Recently completed at least one semester of a study abroad program in China.
- Achieved Chinese at the advanced-mid proficiency level (ACTFL standards).
- Completed 3-4 years of college Chinese or equivalent at a reputable U.S. university language program or study abroad program in China.
- Must be an undergraduate or graduate student with a strong background in East Asia or China.
- Must be a citizen, national or permanent resident of the U.S.
