Japanese
JAPANESE HAS BECOME ONE OF THE MOST WIDELY TAUGHT foreign languages in the United States. It has assumed critical importance in a wide range of professions and interests, from politics and diplomacy to business, education and cutting-edge technology. But the recent growth of the Pacific Rim as an economic and technological giant in world affairs has spurred a fascination with the region's cultures as well as a practical interest in its languages. Hamilton serves both these needs through a minor in Japanese, offered through the East Asian Languages and Literatures Department. More ...

Academic Program

RESEARCH OPPORTUNITIES

Conducting research, either through collaboration with a faculty member or independently, is key to helping you integrate what you have learned in the classroom.

THE SENIOR PROGRAM

The Senior Program serves as an integrating and culminating experience for Japanese by requiring students to use the methodology and knowledge gained in their first three years of study. Each student works closely with at least one faculty member during the course of the program.

RESOURCES

The Asian Studies Program sponsors a number of important cultural, educational and social events each year, many of them in conjunction with the student-run Asian Cultural Society and other departments. Recently these have included a performance of the Beijing Opera, the celebration of the Lunar New Year and a range of talks and other presentations. Students typically have an opportunity to meet and talk with distinguished visitors. They also share views and experiences at the College's monthly Asia Forum.

Students of Japanese have full access to a modern language laboratory, an audiovisual center and a recording studio on campus.

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Language and Culture

    Japanese Highlights

    Language and Culture

Japanese language study in the East Asian Languages and Literatures Department satisfies requirements in the Asian Studies Program. Conversely, students are encouraged to strengthen their understanding of cross-cultural issues in the region by taking elective courses in Asian studies.

    Close Interactions

In the best liberal arts tradition, classes are small and interactive, with one-to-one engagement with teachers. Hamilton's emphasis on close student-faculty relationships is especially important in language-based programs, where continual engagement and participation are critical to learning.

    Endless Possibilities

With its emphasis on language proficiency and an understanding of contemporary culture, the minor in Japanese is excellent training for further studies in graduate school as well as professional careers in international trade, government service, diplomacy, private business, education, journalism and related fields.
