Advising at HamiltonAcademic advising is one of the many ways in which students engage with faculty on an individual basis. Advisors and advisees work together to craft a unique, individual academic plan based upon each student's strengths, weaknesses, and goals. Hamilton College views the advising relationship as an on-going conversation that transcends mere course selection and attempts to assist students as they explore the breadth of the liberal arts curriculum, experience college life, focus on a major concentration, and prepare for life after Hamilton. Every student is advised by a member of the faculty. For your first two years, until you declare a concentration, your faculty advisor will help you adjust to the intellectual demands of the College. To that end, you will find your advisor concerned about the balance of your curriculum as defined by the educational goals stated in the next section. Once you declare a concentration, you will be advised by a professor in that department. Advisors vary in their approaches to advising, but all are eager to see you succeed and to help you toward that success. Although advisors are ready to assist, you must assume major responsibility for your own education when you matriculate at Hamilton. Part of that responsibility is to bring your questions to your advisor (or, when appropriate, to members of the Office of the Dean of Students). If answers are not immediately available, they will know where to ask next. Remember, the initiative must be yours to seek out advice, as the responsibility is yours to act on it.
