In addition to the group events listed above, the program strongly urges students to become involved in activities away from the anglophone student community and to participate in the many activities Paris has to offer. Consider one or more of the following options:
Student organizations or independent associations: The Paris universities have many student groups that organize activities around special interests (sports, travel, hiking, etc.). The city abounds with special interest associations such as hiking clubs, teams, martial arts, etc.
Community classes and volunteering: The program office keeps information on file regarding courses, usually offered for free in the various city districts (arrondissements), and assists in locating opportunities for volunteer work.
Student teaching: Students interested in volunteer teaching may register through a program in which students teach three to four hours a week in a Paris lycée or collège.
Social activities: The program may co-sponsor receptions with French student organizations and encourages HCJYF members to make suggestions and assist in planning events. In addition, a French student assistant is available to meet with students for weekly conversation and to answer questions about university life.
Sports: Students seeking competitive play may join local athletic associations. Opportunities abound for joining soccer, basketball, swimming and volleyball teams. Interested students should investigate possibilities before or upon arrival in France as memberships are usually annual and the competitive season may run from October through May.
