Admission and Fees


Eligibility

  • The Hamilton Junior Year in France is open to students who have completed their sophomore year in good standing in accredited colleges and universities by the end of 2009-10.
  • Students must have an overall average of B and have completed at least one college course in French above the intermediate level with a B- average.
  • Applications for one-semester enrollment are accepted under special conditions.


Important Deadlines

  • Deadline for application: February 28, but students are en couraged to apply as soon as they have discussed their plans with their family and advisors. Applications are reviewed as soon as they are received.
  • French universities request early pre-registration. The process calls for advance planning (birth certificates, transcripts, etc.). Students can only pre-register when they have paid the initial $300 deposit.

Expenses

The fee for the 2009-10 Hamilton Junior Year in France academic year is $40,750. The fee for the 2010-11 academic year will be announced in the acceptance letter.

The annual fee is set from the period extending from departure in early September to the end of the academic year. Every effort has been made to avoid hidden expenses in order to keep the overall cost as low as possible.

The annual fee covers the following:
  • Group travel from a designated U.S. airport to Paris; round trip to and from Paris, and individual open return from Paris to the United States the following summer. Students who choose to travel independently must make their own arrangements, pay for their ticket and inform the HCJYF before May 1.
  • Room and board as stipulated in Homestays. During the winter and spring breaks, students may use their room, but hosts do not provide meals during that time.
  • Instruction and advising (including special visits and shows mandatory for some classes as well as tutorial sessions for designated classes).
  • Fields trips, ex cursions and visits organized by the Hamilton College Junior Year in France (travel, housing, food, visits)
The annual fee does not include the following: insurances, personal expenses, textbooks and study materials, passport and visa, cost for baggage in excess of amount allowed by airline, laundry and dry cleaning, Paris transportation, fees for sports activities, trips not organized by the Junior Year in France, lunches and one dinner a week, board during winter and spring vacations.

Many colleges have cooperative arrangements that transfer fellowships and financial aid from the home institution to the Hamilton College Junior Year in France. In addition, most educational loan arrangements will apply to our study abroad program. All payments should be made by check, payable to HAMILTON COLLEGE JUNIOR YEAR IN FRANCE only (Hamilton College, 198 College Hill Road, Clinton, NY 13323) in order to guarantee proper crediting to the student's individual account.

Refunds

The program's policy on refunding payments to students who withdraw voluntarily or due to illness, or who are dismissed at any time during the year, is as follows:

Withdrawal prior to Aug. 10 50% of first payment (July 1)
Withdrawal from Aug. 11 to day of departure 40% of first payment (July 1)
Withdrawal after departure and prior to Nov. 15 50% of the first and second payments
(July 1 and September 1)
Withdrawal between Nov. 16 and Dec. 10 pro-rated room and board charges refunded from total annual fees plus 20% of second payment (September 1) and 30% of third payment (November 1)
Withdrawal after Dec. 11 pro-rated room and board charges only refunded

Students who question the amount of their refund may appeal to the Programs Abroad Committee.

Insurance

Accident and health insurance is required of all students. All members of the group must submit prior evidence of possessing insurance that will cover them in Europe. The HCJYF encourages members to purchase tuition insurance.


Additional Information

During the spring and summer prior to departure, the director sends accepted students bulletins containing pre-departure instructions and detailed practical information concerning the year's study abroad.

Scholarship Aid

The program may provide modest scholarship aid to students who demonstrate financial need. Students must return proof of need with their application material to be considered for financial aid.

  • Marcel I. Moreau Memorial Scholarship in honor of Marcel I. Moreau, the late Burgess Professor of Romance Languages, who founded the Hamilton Junior Year in France in 1957-58.
  • Frank G. Hamlin Scholarship in honor of Frank G. Hamlin, the late professor of French and director of the Hamilton Junior Year in France, available to a French major who demonstrates financial need.
  • James B. Davis Travel Grant in honor of the late James B. Davis, Burgess Professor of Romance Languages and director of the Hamilton Junior Year in France, a grant covering round-trip travel New York-Biarritz-Paris-New York.
