Admission and Fees (2008-09)


The Hamilton Junior Year in France is open to students who have completed their sophomore year in good standing in accredited colleges and universities by the end of 2007-08.

Students must have an overall average of B and have completed at least one college course above the intermediate level with a B- average.

Applications for one-semester enrollment are accepted under special conditions ONLY (i.e.: science majors: please contact the office directly).

2.  Deadlines for 2008-09

Deadline for application is February 23, but students are encouraged to apply as soon as they have discussed their plans with their family and advisors. Applications are reviewed as soon as they are received.Responses are usually sent out within two to three weeks they are received.

3. Expenses (see paiment schedule below)

The fee for the 2007-08 Hamilton Junior Year in France academic year was $38,900. The fee for the 2008-09 academic year will be $39,950.

The annual fee is set from the period extending from the departure in early September to the end of the academic year. Every effort has been made to avoid hidden expenses in order to keep the overall cost as low as possible.

The annual fee covers the following:
Group travel from a designated U.S. airport to Paris (usually New York City) and individual open return from Paris to New York in Summer 2009; travel to and from Biarritz for the orientation; orientation; instruction and advising; group or individual tutoring  for designated classes; room and board (full board in Biarritz and half board in Paris); field trips, excursions and visits in Paris and Biarritz organized by the Hamilton College Junior Year in France (travel, housing, food, visits).

Note1: Students who choose to travel independently must make their own arrangements, pay for their ticket, and inform the HCJYF before May 1. Students will receive credit toward their account. 

Note 2: During the winter and spring breaks, students may use their room, but hosts do not provide meals during that time, nor should student expect to use cooking facilities.

The annual fee does not include the following:

Personal expenses; textbooks and study material; passport and visa; cost for baggage in excess of amount allowed by airline; laundry and dry cleaning; Paris transportation (the program assists students in obtaining a year long Paris transportation card at a low cost); fees for sports activities; trips not organized by the Junior Year in France; lunches and one dinner a week; board during winter and spring vacations.

Personal expenses:

Books and supplies: about 800$ for the year

Lunches and other expenses: 600+$ a month (this does not include travel outside of the Paris area).

4. Payment Schedule

Application fee (non-refundable, applicable to HCYJF tuition fee)                             $ 40

Note that many colleges have cooperative arrangements that transfer fellowships and financial aid from the home institution to the Hamilton College Junior Year in France. In addition, most educational loan arrangements will apply to our study abroad program. 4. Refunds

The program's policy on refunding payments to students who withdraw voluntarily or due to illness, or who are dismissed at any time during the  year, is as follows:
Withdrawal prior August 10:   50% of first payment
Withdrawal from August 11 to day of departure:   40% of first payment
Withdrawal after departure and prior to November 15: 50% of the first and second payments
Withdrawal between November 16 and December 10: pro-rated room and board charges refunded from total annual fees plus 20% of second payment and 30% of third payment
Withdrawal after December 11:  pro-rated room and board charges only refunded
