Student Responsibilities

To live abroad successfully, participants in the program need stamina, a sense of humor and adaptability.

With the freedom and individual responsibility given to students in European universities, members of the group must conduct themselves in a responsible way. It is assumed that emotionally mature undergraduates understand what constitutes such behavior without written rules for every occasion. Since the program is quite rigorous and makes great demands on its students, only persons in good physical and mental health should apply.

Members of the Hamilton College Junior Year in France are above all going to France as students, and should make their academic life their first priority. Summer vacations, two weeks in December, a week in February and two weeks in Spring offer ample opportunity for travel. Students are under the supervision of the director and assistant to the director. This supervision terminates only with the conclusion of the academic year at the end of May. The director has the authority to place on probation or recommend for formal dismissal a student whose work or conduct warrants such action.

All students of the HCJYF must pledge to speak French with students of the program upon arrival in Biarritz. Use of the computer rooms at Reid Hall is contigent to speaking French. In order to maintain close contact between the students and the staff, enrollment in the Hamilton College Junior Year in France is limited to approximately 40 students.

Students will be asked to register with their particular embassy as soon as they arrive in Paris.
