Study Abroad FactsHow many Hamilton students study abroad?In 2007-08, 231 Hamilton students studied abroad for at least one semester. That's 45 percent of the junior class. For the last five years, between 35 and 40 percent of juniors have studied abroad each year. When do most Hamilton students go abroad?Hamilton recommends that students reserve study abroad for their junior year, and that is what the vast majority do. Some go for the entire year, and some for just a semester. A student who wishes to go abroad second semester sophomore year or first semester senior year may petition to do so. What kinds of programs can earn Hamilton credit or transfer credit?Hamilton College has its own programs or participates in consortium programs in France, Spain, China, and India. In addition, we have a preferred list of about 180 programs throughout the world. Students may also petition for a program if they can show that it meets some special academic need. Hamilton programs earn Hamilton credit directly. Preferred programs and those approved by petition earn transfer credit. Where do Hamilton students go when they study abroad?Hamilton has a wide list of approved programs in 46 countries throughout the world, from Argentina to Madagascar to Wales. The largest number of students in 2007-08 went to Europe, including not only England, Scotland, France, and Spain, but also many other destinations such as Hungary, Greece, and the Czech Republic. Significant numbers of students also studied (in declining order) in: Asia (China, Japan, India, and Vietnam), Oceania (Australia, New Zealand, and Samoa), Africa (South Africa, Botswana and elsewhere). and the Americas (Costa Rica, Argentina and elsewhere). Where can a student get more information about study abroad?We recommend you start with the "Guidelines for Study Abroad". Then, you may wish to contact the Office of Off-Campus Studies or one of Hamilton's Program Offices. Also check the study abroad calendar for general information meetings each semester, as well as "Foreign Exposure" events such as informal coffee hours when students returning from study abroad will answer questions about their experiences. |
