At Hamilton ... undergraduate research matters

Students learn best (and enjoy themselves doing it) when they are active and engaged in their subject matter. Hamilton's individualized approach to education provides many opportunities for research and collaboration with faculty members and with each other.

Many students attending colleges now expect to find undergraduate research or faculty-collaborative opportunities in the sciences -- and Hamilton can pretty much assure a summer research experience for every science concentrator who wants one -- but few colleges offer such opportunities in the arts, humanities and social sciences. For students interested in economics, government, public policy and philosophy, for example, the College's Arthur Levitt Public Affairs Center serves as an undergraduate public policy think tank that matches students with the research needs of the surrounding community. Many research opportunities include $2,500-3,500 stipends, which are guaranteed for the 10-20 students designated as Bristol and Schambach scholars in each first-year class.

The College's commitment to individualized instruction is so much a part of the College's educational philosophy that some undergraduate research opportunities are nearly unique to Hamilton. These include students who conduct chemistry research the summer before they enroll as first-year students at Hamilton, and several students who conduct research each spring in Antarctica as part of a Hamilton professor's on-going study of that continent's disintegrating ice-shelves.

Increasingly, research conducted by students at Hamilton leads to presentations at regional, national and international conferences, and even to papers published in scholarly journals.
