At Hamilton ... speaking persuasively matters

You can't make a difference in the world if you can't communicate your ideas clearly. Hamilton helps students "find their voice," so that they can communicate their ideas and opinions plainly and compellingly.

Hamilton's emphasis on oral communications takes many forms. First, and most important, professors expect you to be an active learner and to participate in class discussions and debates. Oftentimes, class participation is part of your grade, sometimes an oral presentation is part of your assignment, and occasionally you'll have to show what you learned in class by taking an oral examination -- one-on-one, just you and your professor.

There are many opportunities at Hamilton to practice, refine and improve upon your oral communication skills. In addition to what might be taught in the classroom, the Oral Communication Center offers specific courses, workshops and individual tutoring sessions to aid in the development of one's oral communication competencies. There are also clubs for debate and Model UN, science and social science poster sessions, and public speaking competitions, not to mention the growing number of opportunities for Hamilton students to present the results of their research at regional, national and even international conferences.
