Last week there were days when only one or two guys were working on the building, this week there's never less than eight! Things are going quickly. Notably, Paul and his assistant are working on the Red Pine logs that arrived, and they are putting together the canoe leanto on the side of the building. First though, they had to deal with a little bit of rot on the north side of the building. This corner of the house was held up with carpenter ants and insulation... Paul takes the logs that will run along the bottom of the roof, and lays them out flat and even. Then he works out where the uprights and rafters will connect, and shapes a receiving hollow in the wood, so everything fits together smoothly He prepares everything on the ground, using a chainsaw and grinder to get a perfect fit. Here you can see an column fitting into the top beam, so eventually what you see will be the other way up. |
