Cassandra Harris-Lockwood K '74 Stages The Wonderful Wizard of WasMichael "Doc" Woods Is Music DirectorThis weekend, the Stanley Theatre will open its doors for a unique piece of community action and entertainment. For the Good Inc., a non-profit organization started by Kirkland alumna Cassandra Harris-Lockwood '74, has collaborated with the youth of Utica and Cornhill to stage The Wonderful Wizard of Was, an adaptation of L. Frank Baum's children's classic set in Utica. The show, which is written and produced by Harris-Lockwood, features some of the best-known songs from Quincy Jones' The Wiz and the 1939 film The Wizard of Oz. The Utica production is directed by T. K. Howard. Doris Yager, originator of the locally famed Rhythmlites, is the associate producer, and Hamilton Professor of Music Michael "Doc" Woods serves as music director, as well as the arranger and pit conductor.More ... Daniel R. Garcia '84 Wins Small Business AwardAlumni News and NotesCrain's New York Business magazine has honored Daniel R. Garcia '84 with a 2008 Small Business Award. The award recognizes the runaway success of Salsa Caterers & Special Events, the catering and event-planning company Garcia founded in 1990. Since then, Bronx-based Salsa Caterers has emerged as New York City's premier caterer of authentic Hispanic cuisine and culture, whether South American, Latin American, Caribbean Latin, or Spanish. Garcia is among six New York City entrepreneurs who received the award.

Daniel José Custódio '00 Wins Gold and Silver in National Poetry ChampionshipAlumni News and NotesIn his third consecutive year competing in the National Poetry Championshp in Madison, Wisc., Daniel José Custódio '00 has won first place in the individual Slam Master Championship, followed by a second place finish in the Group Piece Championship with his newly founded team, Slam Nahuatl. Both first and second place presentations, each of which received near perfect scores of 29.9 and 29.6 out of a possible 30 points respectively, featured poems written by Custódio. Alumni from classes 1970 to 2006 gathered with current students to explore the special challenges and rewards experienced by Hamiltonians with diverse backgrounds. More ...La Vanguardia presents "The Poet Daniel"Saturday, May 3 at 6 p.m.We are all walking angels unaware of our ability to fly...La Vanguardia presents "The Poet Daniel," a performance by Daniel José Custódio '00, on Saturday, May 3 at 6 p.m. in Cafe Opus. Custódio, a self-proclaimed "revolutionary poet" who uses his poetry to "uplift and heal those who hear his words." He participated in the PSi national poetry championships in 2006 and 2007, where his poems received special recognition. In the 2008 competition he will represent Slam Nahuatl, a team he founded in honor of his Latino heritage. His first collection of published poems, Rising to the Surface (2005), touches upon the struggles of being a young, Latino male in a country not designed for his success. More ...
