Hannah Jaiven ’14

Hannah recalls being impressed by Hamilton’s old-world beauty. On her second visit to campus, she says “I truly felt at home. I could imagine myself spending four years here and being happy.” As a freshman, however, she found that notion challenged until she discovered an unexpected passion.

Recruited to play hockey, a sport she had been involved with all her life, she was observed by the track and field coach “performing a series of backflips before one of my games.” The coach suggested she might be a good pole vaulter, and the rest, as they say, is history. Her new sport and the friendships she developed with her fellow teammates helped transform her college experience.  And along the way she learned about “being unique and being proud of that quality.” During this, her senior year, she has had a rare opportunity to participate in two varsity sports in the same season—indoor track and field, and ice hockey.

A chemistry major from Holland, Michigan, Hannah’s post-graduate plans include a year playing professional women’s hockey in Europe, followed by medical school. Hannah credits the College as a whole with going “above and beyond to encourage students to make the most of their time [here],” noting a special willingness to accommodate unique situations. She adds “Hamilton has so many amazing opportunities that it offers to its students. There is no way any of these opportunities would be possible without the generous financial support of alumni, parents and friends.”
