Winter and Spring Tree Care WorkshopsWinter and spring tree care workshops were held on campus in the months of January, February, March and April, 2007. Tree enthusiasts, master and novice gardeners, and all who appreciate the beauty of nature were invited for no-cost, two-hour sessions at Hamilton's stunning Science Center. Registrants were treated to snacks along with information about gardening in our region that they could then put into practice at their home landscapes. Each session included a combination slide and lecture presentation, followed by a question and answer period. The following topics were addressed in the winter workshop series: Saturday, Jan. 27, 2007Dormant tree and shrub identification was the focus of this class. Participants were asked to bring a piece of something they weren't able to identify in their garden, and the instructors worked to identify it with them. Terry Hawkridge led this session, and Hamilton arborists Jeff Bell and Mike Mahanna also participated in the workshop. 100 people attended this class.Saturday, Feb. 24, 2007Tree and shrub pruning, what to do and when to do it, was the focus of this session. Discussion points included hazards involved in pruning, when to call a professional and how to choose the right company. Mike Mahanna and Terry Hawkridge led this session, which 129 people attended.Saturday, March 31, 2007Planting techniques and best practices was the topic, with attention paid to common Central New York plants and the best time of year for planting. Research in the past two decades has dramatically altered views on how to plant a tree or shrub, so Jeff Bell and Terry Hawkridge reviewed the current science for the 92 people in attendance.Saturday, April 28, 2007Selecting and adapting sites for trees, shrubs and perennial gardens was the focus of this class. 103 participants learned about putting the right plant in the right location, with Terry Hawkridge presiding. Hawkridge discussed reliably hardy and easy- to-grow varieties for the area.Back to 2007 Fall Newsletter |
