Three Faculty Members Receive Teaching Awards at Class & Charter Day

Professors Bob Simon, Marianne Janack and Rob Martin Honored

May 7, 2004 

Hamilton College's highest awards for teaching were presented on Friday to three faculty members from the philosophy and government departments. They were honored during the college’s Class & Charter Day celebration on May 7, an annual convocation recognizing student and faculty excellence during the preceding academic year.  

Professor of Philosophy Robert Simon was awarded the Samuel & Helen Lang Prize for Excellence in Teaching; Assistant Professor of Philosophy Marianne Janack received the John R. Hatch Excellence in Teaching Award; and Assistant Professor of Government Rob Martin was awarded The Class of 1963 Excellence in Teaching Award.

Clinton Child Care Center charter class member John Markos O’Neill is now 33, married, and living in San Francisco.  Former pre-schooler Marc Simon works for the PGA in Connecticut and Russell Morris is a lawyer in Manhattan.  These former pre-school pioneers are now flung far and wide, but they, and their parents, still remember with affection their first social and learning experience out in the world under the care of teacher Phyllis Larrabee.

May 7, 2004  The Health Insurance Portability Act of 1996 (HIPAA) includes regulations regarding privacy requirements. In general, the law requires that covered entities (such as health plans and health care providers) not use or disclose protected health information, except as permitted by HIPAA, unless pursuant to specific authorization. It also sets forth administrative requirements that covered entities must follow, regarding the protected health information.

Summer Hours

Just a reminder that effective Monday, May 24 and continuing through Friday, August 27, the College's regular hours of operation will be 8 a.m. to noon and 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday.

Health Insurance Open Enrollment – July 1

The College negotiated a second open enrollment period for changes in health insurance coverage. If you wish to elect a change in your health insurance options or to add eligible dependents effective July 1, 2004 contact Donna Grygiel (dgrygiel), ext. 4689, no later than June 1.

Health Insurance Coverage for Dependent Children Age 19 and Over

The College’s group health insurance plan provides coverage for dependent children under age 19 and those between the ages of 19 and 23 who are full-time students. If you currently are covering a child age 19 or over who will not be a full-time student next fall, please contact Donna Grygiel (dgrygiel), ext. 4689. She can assist you in identifying other coverage options, if needed. Periodic verification of full-time student status for dependents between the ages of 19 and 23 is required. If you receive such a dependent student questionnaire from MVP, please complete and return immediately as failure to do so will result in cancellation of coverage for the dependent(s).

Supplemental Life Insurance

Personnel Services is coordinating an informational program that will assist in evaluating how much and what type of life insurance is most appropriate for you and your family. Tom McGrath, an individual insurance specialist with TIAA-CREF will make a presentation on Thursday, May 20, at 10 a.m. in the Great Room, located on the first floor of the Philip Spencer House. Tom will also be available for individual consultations during the course of the day. If you would like to schedule an individual appointment or would like to make any changes to your group term supplemental life insurance coverage, please contact Donna Grygiel (dgrygiel), ext. 4689.


Weight Watchers-At-Work

Are you ready for summer and all that goes with it (shorts, bathing suits, etc.)? No? Then join the Weight Watchers-At-Work program on Wednesdays, starting May 12 through June 30 in the Assembly Room, located on the third floor of Bristol Center. This is a great way to eat healthier and lose weight at the same time. This will be the third session this year and the current group has had a combined weight loss of more than 250 pounds!

The price is $85 for new members, $80 for current members and $72 for lifetime members not within 5 pounds of their goal weight. If you are interested, please contact Tori Palmer (vpalmer), ext. 4302 and start the summer with a healthy new you!
