Hey Guys,
Thanks for making our conference call as good as its ever been. The development in this committee is very noticeable. Here are the questions:
In order to write a fair and comprehensive letter I am asking every school in our conference take a few questions to their campus SAAC groups. From the meeting I would ask that each institution write a formal report with their findings no later then Monday October 15th as we need to share this information to as many people as possible before the October 30th Presidents Council Meeting. If you cannot meet this date just let me know.
1) Do you feel that the educational experience would be/is treated differently at the Division I level? (based on issues such as: Financial, Academic, Living Standards)
2) Does your Division III program benefit or is it marginalized based on the existence of a Division I program? (If you do not have DI, Do you think it is on campuses that have Multi-Divisional status)
3) In light of the 1982 Grandfather Clause (1982-83 Conventions, Legislation 64 and 64-1) that allowed 8 institutions to maintain their current Multi-Divisional status. Do you feel that the proposed amendment is fair?
4) Do you feel Red shirting should be allowed at the Division III level?
Thanks Everyone!
And the contact lists are attached.
Community Service: • The Toys for Tots community service is conference wide. This is the trial year for this, so we are going to see how it goes. Important: every school keep track of your own number of toys collected and keep this information so we can compile it all at the end of the Toy Drive. • We will be starting this on October 20 and ending before Thanksgiving. (Hamilton goes till before Christmas, and Union is different because of trimesters). • Each school is in charge of getting their own bin for toy collection. You can contact Amy Mills at amills@hamilton.edu if you want to get information on how to get in contact with the Toys for Tots Organization. You can also call 703-640-9433 to get in contact with a Toys for Tots representative.
Multi-divisional Proposal The council wants the playing field/opportunity to be equal for all D3 athletes; being it at a school where D1 isn’t present or one where D1 is present. The council feels that a D3 school with a D1 program gets better facilities, publicity, etc. It is also important that D1 athletes are held to the same standards as the D3 athletes at the same school. • This proposal is especially important to the UCAA because it affects ½ the teams in our conference. (Only 8 out of 427 teams are affected in the country, but ½ of that number is in our conference). • Trevor has sent out an email with questions regarding the multidivisional proposal as well as the red shirting proposal. Make sure to get your respective school SAAC’s opinion and get a summary back to Trevor. This will be the basis for the letter we send out to the president’s council stating our voice about this proposal.
Clarkson’s Perspective • The proposal hurts their school as far as athletes and community as a whole. Clarkson is built around their hockey culture. Without it, their community is hurt and it pretty much knocks out North Country. Overall: Division 1 hockey players and Division 3 athletes get equal treatment.
St. Lawrence’s Perspective • Hockey brings in students at their school and if they lose their hockey program, the school’s culture won’t last. The majority of facilities are built by donations from Alumni.
Hobart’s Perspective • Their D1 lacrosse: the players don’t get any extra special treatment. The funding for spring break training and equipment comes from donations by Alumni. The living accommodations and academic standards are the same for D1 and D3 athletes. Overall: they do not want to see their status go back to D3.
Vassar’s Perspective • D1 schools have more emphasis on sports, but if a team is good they shouldn’t be brought down to D3 competition. It’s unfair for a talented hockey player not to get a full scholarship at a school they want to go to because of this new proposal.
What to do about this? Each school has their own plan, and its not public information.
If this proposal goes to the floor, the vote is Oct 20th. If it goes that far, the president’s council will vote on it in January.
D3 Red shirting: Proposal: D3 athletes won’t be able to red shirt (is not affected by medical) • They will also be voting on that in January, 2004 if it gets that far. Trevor also sent out a question about this for you to bring to your campus SAAC.
UCAA SAAC Web Page
• The IT guy that does the UCAA site was not willing to make the website for us or give us space (due to security issue). • Proposed date of completion: Oct 23rd. (Alex and Kelly are working on it) • Host-either by schools or buy a server. • If we write a proposal for a grant to get money for space for the site, we would send that to Laurel Kane at Clarkson. • Prices: $19/mo. for a server/ or 15 cents per some byte if we do it through one of the school’s web pages. • Information posted on the Website: Meeting Notes, Agenda for the meeting, Agenda for the Next meeting, pictures, contact information of the reps.
Communication-following our short term objectives • Email. Since our committee has such a high turnover, make sure to keep the contact information from your school’s reps up to date. • Possibility of a message board on our website. • Yahoo message board. If you post something on there, it sends an email out to everyone on the list. It would have security so only the people meant to have access to it would get access. • Trevor-or anyone for that matter. When you send out emails, put the main point/focus of the email in the text body of the email as well as an attachment. Some people are having trouble reading attachments. Next Meeting (In Person) • Scheduled for November 30th at Hamilton • Make sure we all have each other’s emergency contact info in case of cancellation due to bad weather. • Union-since you are on trimesters, try to get an alternate. If this isn’t going to be possible please let us know. • If occurrence of bad weather, there will be a conference call instead an in-person meeting. It is scheduled for December 1st. Keep on continuing to strengthen your campus SAACs.
