USE TripsYour USE trip will stay in Utica "camping inside" in a downtown location. And you will spend most of your time with one of the agencies below…Underground CaféA coffee shop, art space and community center run by teens, for teens. The Underground Café hosts youth-initiated and organized activities such as art exhibits, leadership courses, open mic nights, break dancing lessons, homework help, jazz concerts, social change workshops and panel discussions, and is run entirely by volunteers.Johnson Park Center (JPC)Johnson Park used to be the roughest spot in the Cornhill section of Utica but thanks to the work of the Johnson Park Center it's now a thriving place of positive change with a youth mentoring and tutoring program, transitional housing for homeless families, job-training and placement for women including ex-offenders. We will be helping with various programs including the community garden, food pantry, recreational and educational activities with kids, and preparing for new arrivals in JPC housing units.Hospitality RowAlong Eagle Street in Utica within two or three blocks of each other are several human service agencies for the Cornhill section of Utica: Hope House a free meal program for the homeless and hungry, Health Friends, making prescription drugs available for low-income families, New Horizons, a shelter for teenage girls who are on their own, Abraham House, a facility for hospice care for terminally ill, and Emmaus House, a homeless shelter for women and their children. We'll be doing various service projects among Hospitality Row agencies.Refugee Centerhttp://www.mvrcr.orgUtica has one of the major refugee resettlement programs in the country, and has been providing a new home for refugees since the 1970s beginning with Vietnamese, and continuing with Russian, Bosnian, Somalian, Sudanese, and most recently refugees from Myanmar (aka Burma). We'll help some recent arrivals get settled into life in the USA, buying food, household supplies, and setting up furniture for the apartments of new arrivals. Habitat for Humanityhttp://www.habitat.orgThis construction-minded service experience is a chance to help build a house for a family looking to break into the often elusive world of home-ownership. We could be putting up drywall, painting, landscaping, roofing… who can say? This group may also do other painting jobs around town in various non-profit agencies. |
