Teaching Awards

The Class of 1963 Excellence in Teaching Award

The Class of 1963 Excellence in Teaching Award was established in 1988 by members of the Class of 1963 on the occasion of their 25th reunion. The annual award recognizes a professor in a tenure track or tenured position who has demonstrated extraordinary commitment to and skill in teaching undergraduates. Previous winners of the Excellence in Teaching Award are not eligible.

The John R. Hatch Excellence in Teaching Award

The John R. Hatch Excellence in Teaching Award was established through a gift made by Alfrederic S. Hatch, Class of 1958, in memory of his father, John R. Hatch, Class of 1925. This annual award recognizes a tenure-track faculty member who has been employed by the College for fewer than five years and who is selected on the basis of superior teaching, high-quality scholarly research, as well as significant and positive impact on students.

The Samuel and Helen Lang Prize for Excellence in Teaching

The Samuel and Helen Lang Prize for Excellence in Teaching, established in 1997 by Helen Lang, mother of Michael C. Lang, Class of 1967, to honor faculty members like John Mattingly, whose teaching the donor's son valued tremendously--faculty members noted for having a profoundly positive effect on their students. Michael Lang often advises students to "major in a great teacher," and this fund is designed to reward just such teachers. This annual award will be presented to a tenured member of the Faculty on the basis of superior teaching and of significant and positive impact on students. In addition to a monetary award, the recipient will be granted funds for student research or student intern assistance, either during the academic year or in the summer months.

The Class of 1962 Outstanding Teaching Award

The Class of 1962 Outstanding Teaching Award, established in 1987 by members of the Class of 1962 on the occasion of their 25th Reunion, is to be awarded every five years to an outstanding tenured member of the faculty in recognition of distinguished teaching. Professor of Economics Betsy Jensen is currently concluding her final year as the recipient of the Class of 1962 Outstanding Teaching Award.
