The third annual conference of student work on
"Social Justice"Hamilton College, Clinton, NY.
on
Friday and Saturday Sept. 11th & 12th, 2009 Friday, September 11th, 4:15 p.m. Red Pit "Civil Initiative: Organizing for Social Change"John Fife, a life-long immigration rights activist, and founder of "No More Deaths" (a group that provides humanitarian aid to those crossing the desert around the border) will be our guest speaker. Refreshments will follow:
Saturday, September 12th, 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m.
10:00 a.m. Panel: The Red Pit, KJJuancho Hurtado '11, Emerson Grant Recipient will present Street Theatre in Columbia. He is studying street theatre and works with children who might otherwise not be able to harness their creative talents because of their economic situation.
Amy Tannenbaum '10, Bristol Research Grant recipient, will talk about her research working with CODEPINK, on how women have used performance art in pursuit of social change.
Selena Carrion '10, a Kirkland Endowment Summer Research Associate, will present her work on "South African female activists in the anti-apartheid movement."
Break for refreshments Sushmita Preetha '11, a Kirkland Endowment Research Associate will present her work on "NGO Activism in Bangladesh: At What Cost?"
Sujitha Amalanayagam'10, a DSJP Service Associate will talk about her work with "Traveller not Tourist", a non-profit organization whose main goal is to allow foreigners to do socially conscious work in Peru while experiencing and learning about the culture.www.travellernottourist.com.
Sarah Goodell '11, a DSJP Service Associate will talk about her work with the Advocates for Human Rights.
