Community Outreach and Volunteering

HAVOC

(Hamilton Action Volunteer Outreach Coalition)

HAVOC is a student-run organization providing community service for Oneida County and beyond since 1988. Several hundred students volunteer in weekly projects: Habitat for Humanity, tutoring in local and inner-city schools, soup kitchens, homes for runaways and abused women, rape crisis, Big Brothers/Big Sisters, nursing homes and Best Buddies. Additionally, HAVOC sponsors an annual daffodil sale, bowl-a-thon, holiday toy drive, Ox-Fam fast, and more.

ASB

(Alternative Spring Break)

ASB sponsors six week-long work trips during every spring break with 10 - 12 students per trip. These trips, which range from construction to nature conservancy to community interaction/working with kids are student-led and offer the chance to help out in a remote community and also to bond with your Hamilton classmates.

USE

(Urban Service Experience)

  1. A preorientation program (like Adirondack Adventure) every August to help you get to know 10 other first-year students while learning about Utica, our urban neighbor, and volunteering with various agencies which help Utica citizens.
  2. The same program every January before the spring semester begins offers the opportunity to all Hamilton students the chance to live and work in Utica for three days.
