Mozilla Thunderbird

ITS Supported Replacement for Eudora

Qualcomm recently announced they will cease commercial development of Eudora, the popular e-mail software product used at Hamilton College for many years.

Due to Eudora's uncertain future and to difficulties reported by users who have tried the latest version, Information Technology Services (ITS) is recommending that Eudora users transition to Mozilla Thunderbird.  Although Eudora will continue to function, Qualcomm has announced that after March 31st, 2007, Eudora will revert to "Light Mode", which removes access to many important features.

We understand that changing e-mail software can be inconvenient so please consider the following options: you can continue to use Eudora in Light Mode, you can switch to another e-mail program, or you can follow our recommendation to migrate to Thunderbird.  If you choose to stay with Eudora, several important features will disappear on March 31st and it may become increasingly difficult to troubleshoot Eudora. If you switch to another program, please remember that ITS can provide only limited support for applications not standard to Hamilton (e.g. MS Outlook).  If you migrate to Thunderbird, we are happy to assist you with the process now or when it is convenient for you.

To facilitate the transition to Thunderbird, ITS is doing the following:

Self-installation instructions for Windows and Macintosh users are available.  The detailed installation guides will easily guide you through the complete migration process.  A typical migration takes approximately 20-30 minutes. For those with years of accumulated archived mail, the process may take much longer (up to an hour).
