Inkjet and Laser Toner Printer Cartridges

There are recepticles in Beinecke, bookstore (Bristol Center basement), the Science Center (ground floor stockroom corridor), and the second floor of Root Dorm for inkjet recycling.  There are laser toner recycling boxes in the bookstore and Science Center.

Cell Phones

Bring used cell phones to Beinecke and place them in the inkjet cartridge collection bin.

Non-Alkaline Batteries

Alkaline batteries do not contain hazardous heavy metals and can be disposed of in the trash.  Non-alkaline batteries contain these metals and must be disposed of properly to avoid landfill and ground water contamination.

There are yellow battery collection recepticles in the Beinecke lobby, bookstore (Bristol Campus Center basement), and Science Center (ground floor stockroom corridor).

You can recycle any
rechargeable batteries from cameras, watches, computers, and phones, including:

lithium
lithium ion
mercury
nickel-cadmium
sealed lead
lead acid
Compact florescent light bulbs (CFLs)

CFLs contain a very small amount of mercury and they need to be disposed of safely and properly.  Hamilton collects and recycles CFLs.  On campus, please give your burned-out CFLs to a member of the custodial staff, who will place them in a designated universal waste collection area.  Faculty and staff should fill out an iService work order form, which can be found at http://www.hamilton.edu/college/physical_plant/workcontrol.html

For information on off-campus recycling of CFLs, please visit www.epa.gov/epaoswer/hazwaste/id/univwast/where/index.htm or contact your local municipal solid waste agency.

Electronic Waste

Place computers and other electronic waste beside any garbage can.  Physical Plant will collect and recycle e-waste.

CDs and DVDs

Bring unwanted CDs, DVDs, and cases to Beinecke (between the Mail Center and Diner), the Library, or McEwen for recycling.  They will be recycled through the CD Recycling Center of America.  Please remove and recycle paper inserts from cases.

Plastic Bags

Bring clean plastic bags to Beinecke (by the Mail Center package window) for recycling.  Bags will be recycled via Hannaford Supermarket in Clinton.

Sneakers

Bring used sneakers and other rubber-soled shoes (wearable or unwearable) to the bin inside the front door of the Blood Fitness Center.  Please tie shoelaces together when possible.  Physical Plant will deliver sneakers to the Salvation Army for resale.

FACT:

  • Hamilton pays $72.15 for every ton of garbage we produce in the community, but disposing of recyclables is free.  Please reduce, reuse, and recycle whenever possible!

UPDATE:

  • Oneida-Herkimer Solid Waste Authority has recently changed its recycling guidelines and no longer accepts plastic #6, which includes Styrofoam containers, Solo cups, most plastic cups, and Opus cups.

TIPS:

  • The container group includes plastics #1-5 (look on the bottom of most containers for the recycling symbol).
  • Cups from McEwen and the Diner are not recyclable!  Commons cups (only the ones that have "Bon Appetit" on the side) are recyclable if they are rinsed out.
  • Use the blue bin in your room or office to make recycling easier.
  • Use a travel mug or water bottle instead of paper cups.
