Summer Construction Projects - 2008

Kirner-Johnson addition and renovation:
The construction of the new addition is scheduled for completion in late July. Contractors are enclosing the structure with the new window wall on the east and north faces, and completing the interior areas. The last of the concrete pours in the addition are expected to take place over the next two weeks. Site work along the east face is progressing, with underground utility installation this week followed by development of the foundation walls for the new walkway the week of May 19. The latter will require the closure of Martin's Way from Beinecke Village to McEwen. While the closure is in place, the Carpenter Shop will be performing repairs to the pedestrian bridge.
Bristol Center arch restoration:
The arches around the terrace of Bristol Center have been under repair the past five weeks. The work is nearing completion, and we expect this effort to be completed just prior to Commencement. [View pictures]

Observatory monument and cannon foundations:
The monument work is complete. However, the cannon foundation repairs will not be completed until after Commencement, as the final touches will require a crane for removal of the cannons.

Milbank Residence Hall kitchenettes, bathrooms and roof renovations/replacement:
As with Babbitt this past year, bathrooms and kitchenettes in all suites will be renovated, bedrooms will receive lighting upgrades and the roof will be replaced. The work will start May 27 following Commencement and is scheduled for completion by Aug. 15. At the completion of this work, all the bedrooms will receive new furniture.

McEwen Dining Hall clerestory acoustical improvements:
New acoustical panels will be installed in the two clerestories in the seating area to improve sound quality within the space. This work is scheduled to take place in late June and should take approximately two weeks.

South Campus wind turbine replacement:
The wind turbine on the South Campus will be replaced this summer. The old turbine has been removed, and a new 10kw Fortis turbine will take its place. The unit is expected to be operational by mid-August.

Anderson-Connell Alumni Center carpet replacement and acoustical upgrade:
The carpet replacement in the public areas is scheduled to begin on July 7 and be completed July 27. Installation of acoustical panels in the second floor rear administrative areas will begin July 14 and be completed by the end of the same week. Repairs to the front conference room walls and foundation are expected to begin June 9.

Alumni Gym:
Flooring for the lower level hallways will be replaced in June following Commencement. This work will take approximately one week. Entry mats will be replaced for this building and Scott Field House between June 30 and July 11. The controls for the gym heat wheel will be replaced in July.

Couper Hall window and carpet replacements:
Carpet in classrooms and offices will be replaced starting June 23 and take approximately two weeks. The remaining exterior windows (turret windows were replaced in 2006) are scheduled to be replaced this summer.

Keehn Residence Hall flooring replacement:
Carpet in bedrooms and common areas and sheet vinyl flooring on the ground floor will be replaced beginning June 17 and be completed by July 25.

Science Building ground floor repairs:
The north ground floor hallway requires repairs to the sheet vinyl flooring.

Several sections will be removed and replaced in this area in early August.

Dunham Residence Hall bedroom flooring replacement:
This phase two effort to upgrade flooring in the residence hall rooms will begin June 9 and last until July 18. This work will require asbestos abatement of the old floor tile.

Exterior painting:
3 College Hill Road and 100 College Hill Road will receive new coats of paint this summer.

11 College Hill Road, stone wall repairs and foundation replacement:
The dry laid stone wall on the west side of the driveway needs to be re-layed, and the south porch foundation needs replacement.

This work has yet to be scheduled.

Burke Library:
The joints between the limestone panels on the exterior will be recaulked, and several of the roof capstones will be replaced. Physical Plant will also be supporting the library in modifications to the first floor reference area.

Buttrick Hall side entrance stair replacement:
This work is expected to begin in late June and last approximately six weeks. This extensive effort will include the removal of the old stairs and foundation to be replaced with new installation of an entrance canopy and installation of a snow melt system in the steps and platform. Entrance to the building will be through the main quad entrance or the west side basement entrance.

Eells Residence Hall domestic water line repairs:
Repairs on the interior first-floor water system will begin in mid-June and last approximately six weeks.

Schambach roof replacement:
The last of the roof sections, this one over Room 118, will be completed this summer.

Outdoor Leadership Center driveway lighting:
Low-level lighting will be installed along the east side of the driveway.

Physical Plant upgrades and renovations:
As the campus has expanded, so have Physical Plant's requirements. This summer and fall, the recycling yard and satellite dishes will be relocated to Campus Road, a new equipment building will be constructed at Physical Plant, the old equipment, shop and office buildings will receive renovations, and site work to improve stormwater retention and runoff will be completed. The recycling yard effort should be completed by the end of June, which will allow work to begin at the Griffin Road site. Stormwater improvements are in progress.

Miller Road paving:
Miller Road will be repaved this summer. This work will also include drainage improvements to the road. The work will be completed by mid-August.

Card Access:
The remaining residence halls will receive card access systems for the exterior doors. The work is in progress and should be fully in place by the time students return in the fall. This effort is the result of the work of members of ITS, Residential Life, Administrative Services and Physical Plant.

Replacement of the carpet in the language lab will take place between June 18 and 20. Installation of a new emergency generator for the building is scheduled for the fall.
