Let's Get Ready (LGR) expands access to college for low-income high school students. Using college volunteers as tutors, mentors and role models, LGR provides intensive SAT preparation and critical assistance with the college admissions process as no cost to students. In 2010, LGR served nearly 2,300 high school students in 57 programs through the northeast, and 10,000 students since its founding in 1998.
The COOP currently supports two LGR programs. Both programs offer SAT Math and Verbal coaching for students at Proctor High School, part of the Utica City School District. On Saturdays, seven Hamilton coaches work with Proctor's Young Scholars program. Mondays and Tuesdays thirteen other Hamilton coaches work with students at the Underground Cafe, a local hangout for Proctor students. In addition to offering coaching in SAT math and verbal skills Hamilton students also help guide Proctor students through the college application process, and offer advice and anectdotes on everything from filling out financial aid forms to what kind of extra-curricular activities are available in college.
Let's Get Ready is made possible through funding from the Office of the President and the Kirkland Endowment.
