At times the Gould makes good time cutting through newly formed pancake ice. Yet our objectives, three oceanographic moorings, lay beyond our reach within a zone of amalgamated multi-year ice, icebergs, and newly formed sea ice. This kind of thick ice is very difficult for the Gould, or any ship, to cut through. The edge of this heavy pack ice can clearly be seen on the ship's radar as it stands higher in the water due to its great thickness. The scene is kind of surreal with small patches of open water providing sea smoke (water vapor) to the frigid Antarctic air, outside temperatures are -22 degrees C. | |
