Photo: Dr. Amy Leventer (right) a geology professor at Colgate University provides instructions to Heather Schrum '05 and Josh Kinsman (University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire '06) on sampling the underway seawater system for phytoplankton samples. The apparatus in the background is the seawater line which has sensors for flourometery, transmissivity, salinity, temperature, and pCO2. These measurements along with Dr. Leventer's phytoplankton samples provide a continuous and valuable underway catalog of changing surface ocean conditions in a remote part of the Southern Ocean.
