The apparatus in the background is the seawater line which has sensors for flourometery, transmissivity, salinity, temperature, and pCO2. These measurements along with Dr. Leventer's phytoplankton samples provide a continuous and valuable underway catalog of changing surface ocean conditions in a remote part of the Southern Ocean.
