June 17:
June 17 Sunday was a chance for our group to learn about the Antarctic facilities and research efforts underway at both the Institute for Antarctic and Southern Ocean Studies (IASOS at the Univ. of Tasmania) and the Australian Governments Antarctic Division.

Fig 49: Dr. Patti Virtue explains the colored cultures of diatoms that are used to feed the world’s only sustainable Antarctic krill aquariums. These diatoms are each dominated by a different chlorophyll pigment and all are needed to provide proper nutrition to the Division’s krill stocks which are kept in large circular tanks.
