Sara Thomas is a masters student in Biological Oceanography at the University of Hawai'i at Manoa. Sara is part of the NSF sponsored Center for Microbial Oceanography; Research and Education (CMORE) and researches chemoautotrophic bacteria in the pelagic water column. She is working with Craig R. Smith, professor of oceanography at the University of Hawaii at Manoa and a principal investigator on LARISSA.

Larissa was a figure from Greek mythology, a wife of Poseidon; often pictured holding a vessel having three handles. We think of the three handles as 'Ice/Climate' - 'Marine Geology' and 'Life.'
