German Academic Exchange Program (D.A.A.D.)

Description

The German Academic Exchange Service (Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst Dienst -- DAAD) supports international academic cooperation. DAAD offers programs and funding for students, faculty, researchers and others in higher education, providing financial support to over 50,000 individuals per year. It also represents the German higher education system abroad, promoting Germany as an academic and research destination, and helping to build ties between institutions around the world.

Eligibility

• Must be U.S. or Canadian citizen. Foreign nationals must have studies at an accredited U.S. or Canadian university for at least two years. All foreign nationals must contact DAAD New York before applying to determine their eligibility status.
• Applicants in all academic fields are welcome to apply.
• Applicants in the arts, humanities and social sciences should have a good command of the German language.
• Must have completed an undergraduate degree by the beginning date of the grant
• Proficiency in German appropriate to the plan of study (ordinarily a minimum of two years of college-level German) and a willingness to strengthen language skills prior to departure.
• Students in the natural and physical sciences may apply with little or no German background, but should plan to take German during the senior year.

Selection

Selection is based on overall academic achievement and feasibility of the proposed plan of study. DAAD is interested in candidates from a broad range of disciplines, including the natural sciences, but graduating seniors may not apply to study music performance or fine arts. Students in the sciences are especially encouraged to apply.

Students with no prior experience in Germany generally will be expected to propose enrolling in a German university for a year, and should describe the program of study they would like to pursue in as much detail as possible. Students who have previously lived or studied in Germany will be expected to present a more fully developed research/study project that they would like to pursue through course work and independent study. Final placement in a German university will be arranged by DAAD, but applicants should initiate contact with the institutions at which they wish to study; preference will be given to applicants who have been invited by a faculty member at a German university to study at a particular university department, therefore, it is highly recommended that nominees include with their final application a letter from a German professor or researcher agreeing to supervise their work.

Students are also encouraged to apply for other grants to Germany available through Fulbright Grants. Fulbright is open to applicants in all fields of study. A teaching fellowship in Austria is also an alternative opportunity (see www.iie.org/fulbright). Please note that the DAAD and the German Fulbright Committee cooperate on choosing winners. If you enter both competitions and win one of the awards, you will become ineligible for the other.

Amount and Duration

Awards cover ten months of study (October 1 to July 31), including airfare, health insurance, and a monthly maintenance allowance. At the discretion of DAAD, a stipend for a two-month language course prior to the grant period may be included. Awards are usually announced in early March.
