The United States Department of Education strongly encourages tax filers who are completing the online FAFSA to use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool. The FAFSA links with an IRS database so that students and parents can view information from their filed federal income tax returns. FAFSA users can choose to transfer their income data from the IRS database to update their online FAFSA.
The Hamilton College Financial Aid Office highly recommends that students and parents filing a federal income tax return use the IRS Data Retrieval Tool when completing their individual sections of the FAFSA.
If you have completed the online FAFSA prior to having filed your federal income tax returns, you can make a "correction" to your FAFSA after you have filed your taxes. Per the Department of Education, if filing your federal income tax return electronically, please allow up to 2 weeks for processing by the IRS; paper tax filers should allow for 6-8 weeks for processing by the IRS. Thereafter, by making a "correction", you can go through the IRS Data Retrieval Process. A new FAFSA record will be automatically sent to the Hamilton College Financial Aid Office with your updated income information.
Please note that the IRS Data Retrieval Tool cannot be used in these circumstances:
