Antoine du Bourg
Antoine du Bourg, a teacher known for inspiring and motivating legions of students during his long career, encouraged many to attend Hamilton. Mr. du Bourg, or “Tony” as he was known, taught physics and music at the Pingry School of New Jersey for 47 years before moving to the faculty at St. George’s School in Rhode Island where he continued to teach music, give instrument lessons and direct the brass ensemble until his death in 2011.
A protégé of longtime choir director John Baldwin, Tony acknowledged in a letter to President Joan Stewart in 2009, “I was touched by teachers both in prep school and at Hamilton who were passionate and made the classes and music come alive. Names like Bobo Rudd, Tom Johnston and especially my very good friend John Baldwin come to mind. I think that John’s encouragement of my limited musical abilities helped me become a teacher. This work I still am doing with great joy after 53 years.”
Generous with his financial resources, Tony always seemed to come through to meet a need. When Hamilton’s Steinmeyer organ needed repair, Tony wrote a check. He later endowed The Music Department Academic Enrichment Fund to “support the academic program and faculty of Hamilton’s Music Department.”
Hamilton also received a bequest from his brother, Joseph F. McCrindle, that established The Antoine du Bourg Scholarship, and a bequest from Tony’s estate will provide scholarships for students demonstrating financial need who are interested in music and the arts.
