As a sprint triathlon event, the distances are 525 yds of swimming (21 lengths in the pool), 9 miles of on-road biking (two times around the Griffin Road loop and 5k of cross-country running (the cross-country course).
The entire event takes place on the Hamilton campus and surrounding roads. HamTrek starts in the Bristol Pool and finishes in the field behind the fitness center.
Participants are encouraged to collect donations to benefit the Shawn Grady Memorial Fund. The Fund, a non-profit/tax exempt organization devoted to helping local families who have children with life-threatening illnesses, was established in memory of Shawn Grady, an outstanding athlete who was diagnosed with cancer in the fall of his sophomore year. http://www.shawngradyfund.org
Team McBratney was the overall winner of the 2014 HamTrek triathlon with a time of 53:40.04. Professor of English Onno Oerlemans was the top individual finisher clocking in at 57:32.88, and Lauren King ’16 was the top female individual at 01:05:44.82.
Sixty-three teams and 74 individuals competed in the 11th annual event on May 2. Participants swam 21 lengths in the pool, biked nine miles and ran 5 kilometers.
