Associate Director of Physical Plant for Grounds & Custodial Services

Position Summary:

The Associate Director of Grounds and Custodial Services is responsible for the strategic and operational direction of Hamilton College’s Grounds and Custodial Services. Responsibilities include project management, departmental coordination and participation in campus wide planning activities, and providing leadership and mentoring to the Grounds Services and Custodial Services Managers in developing strategic, tactical and operational plans to guide the grounds and custodial services shops. Additionally, the Associate Director is responsible for the direct management of small to mid-sized renovation and restoration projects of college Landscapes, Athletic Fields, and Facilities.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide leadership, operational, and administrative direction for grounds and custodial service delivery to the college community and facilities.
  • Develops proposals, makes recommendations, and manages the annual grounds and custodial operating budget of approximately $2M.
  • Develops and implements the long term strategic and short term operational plans as well as asset procurement management and replacement plans for athletic grounds, landscape and custodial services, develop and implement specifications and standards for the procurement of departmental supplies and equipment.
  • Develop and implement appropriate departmental procedures and processes to increase departmental performance, efficiency and safety.  Works in cooperation with the Physical Plant management staff and Union representatives to ensure departmental policies and procedures are consistent across all Physical Plant shops.  
  • Manages college wide communications as regarding grounds and custodial renovation activities including    preparation and delivery of reports and presentations to appropriate departments and groups.
  • Responsible for staff recruitment, administration of the annual performance evaluation and staff development process and works in cooperation with the Management and Union to ensure production and Human Resource challenges are resolved in a timely, efficient and consistent manner.
  • Serve on various campus and departmental committees and participates in negotiation of collective bargaining agreements.
  • Manages the college’s renovation and revitalization projects from initiation through completion which includes but is not limited to, negotiating and manages outsourced service contracts for the provision of services outside the scope of the in-house staff and coordinating facility use with other departments during renovation projects.
  • Develop and promote campus wide waste management plan including but not limited to recycling, composting and solid waste removal.
  • Responsible for the maintenance of the colleges sanitary and storm sewer systems and campus wide asbestos abatement work.
  • Develops plans, procedures and implements requirements to support emergency operations including, but not limited to snow removal/emergencies flooding, plugged sewers, water breaks and damage caused by storms.
  • Keeps up to date, interprets and ensures compliance to applicable local, state, and federal regulations.
  • Continuously works to develop a culture of co-operation and teamwork amongst the physical plant staff and the college community
  • Performs other duties as assigned by management

Qualifications:

Bachelor’s degree in an Environmental Services/Facilities Management or related field plus 7 to 10 years’ experience managing a large workforce in a facilities environment required. Experience in landscape and/or urban tree management.  Master’s Degree preferred. Experience in a Union environment preferred.  Equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.  APPA certification, Arborist license or certification, and certification in facility management will be considered.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

  • Demonstrated knowledge of grounds, landscape management/urban forestry, custodial service procedures, standards, methods, safety, OSHA regulations and environmental laws and regulations. 
  • Demonstrated strategic leadership, mentoring, personnel management skills for a large workforce.
  • Project management skills, ability to multitask, establish priorities and deadlines and manage to established deadlines.  Ability to problem solve, analyze and change priorities when needed.
  • Must possess strong written and oral communication skills. 
  • Ability to work in a collaborative team environment with internal Physical Plant shops/departments and other campus organizations.
  • Ability to develop, maintain and promote a cooperative, professional, and respectful working relationships with all employees, contractors, vendors, and business partners of the college. 
  • Must have enthusiasm for the job and a positive supportive customer service approach. 
  • Expertise in Microsoft products (excel and word).
