Couper Librarian

Hamilton College invites applications and nominations for the position of Couper College Librarian.  The Couper Librarian is responsible for the leadership and management of all elements of the college library, including the Daniel Burke Library, the Media Library, the Music Library, and Special Collections.  The Librarian, who reports directly to the Vice-President for Academic Affairs/Dean of the Faculty, oversees a budget of $3.7 million and a staff of 34.

The successful candidate will have a strategic, long-term vision for integrating the services afforded by traditional libraries with the opportunities created by continually emerging technologies in a library that is central to the academic mission of Hamilton College.  This candidate will be familiar with trends in scholarly publishing and their impact on academic libraries; will understand and embrace the various roles the library plays in the service of divergent constituencies and academic disciplines; will recognize the significant role of special collections in support of the academic program; will have demonstrated abilities as a problem solver who can work effectively and creatively not only with library personnel, but more widely among faculty, college administrators, students, and academic support organizations; and will have a commitment to furthering regional and national cooperation.

Required are an MLS from an ALA-accredited institution, or a comparable advanced degree in a related field, and demonstrated experience as an academic administrator.  Also essential are strong interpersonal and communication skills that serve a collaborative, transparent management style and enable the Couper Librarian to be an effective advocate for the library and its programs.
