What do I back up?

What would your reaction be if you lost a particular Word document, email, picture, etc. from your computer? If your answer is cry, kick, or scream, that file should be backed up!

  • Email, email attachments, address book
    • Email is a no brainer.  It contains oodles of important conversations, information, and provides us with a highly efficient and documented way to communicate with one another.  Many of us reference old emails frequently throughout the day to reference procedures, dates and other things.  Losing older email can result in a serious problem as there is usually a ton of important information that people keep in their email.  Through our partnership with Google, we’re provided with a tremendous amount of email storage (25 GB).  And, Google keeps our email at redundant sites for disaster recovery and continuity.  This, however, does not mean that our Google email is automatically backed up. So in short, if you delete a message, delete your inbox, etc. and empty the trash, there is no backup to get it back.  Using a local mail client and saving things in your local folders is one way to create a backup of your email.  To discuss your email back up options, contact the ITS Help Desk to speak with a team member on how best to preserve your data.
  • Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, and PowerPoint) documents
  • Multimedia files (music, movies, videos, etc.)
    • Please note, multimedia files take up a lot of space. We do not have adequate space on our servers to back up your personal multimedia files.
  • Browser (e.g. Firefox, IE, Chrome) favorites
  • Anything else that is important to you! Have you looked on your desktop lately?
