It is not uncommon for an ITS employee to be asked, "How do you keep up with all of the changes in technology?" The truth is, we can't. That said, it doesn't stop us from trying! This month, Ryan Coyle provides some sources that the broader Hamilton Community may find helpful in keeping ahead of the technology curve. We also welcome a new employee to the Help Desk and our Instructional Technology Support Services team highlights a variety of services available on campus.

ITS Welcomes Ben Thomas - Maureen Scoones

The next time you call the ITS Help Desk, you may be speaking with Ben Thomas. Ben joined ITS on September 10, 2012 in the position of Information Technology Assistant. He is a 2011 graduate of Sage College of Albany, earning his degree in computer science.

Keeping Pace with the Tech Race - Ryan Coyle
If you're interested in technology, it can be difficult to keep up with the rapid pace of change. For example, if I had told you a few years ago that Apple would be the most valuable company in the world, you would have put me in a padded room with a rather restrictive white jacket. More...

Clicker Loaner Pack - Carl Rosenfield

Do wish you could take a quick poll of your students during a lecture, just to find out how many are actually keeping up with you? You might be interested in borrowing our clickers for a class or two.

Student Work and Computer Backups - Nikki Reynolds
Have you considered how much of the work you assign is completed on student computers? Ninety-eight percent of the freshman class brought computers with them, and that number has been above 95% for at least the last four years. In addition to the standard office productivity software, students can use web browsers to access all sorts of special tools, including the software we host on our Citrix server. What would your students lose if their computers crashed, and their hard drives turned to gobbledygook? Do you think one of your students might like a free hard drive? More...

A New Home for Academic Data - Ted Fondak
As previously announced, ITS dry docked the Multimedia Storage server (MSS) and Software server over the summer for overhaul and repurposing. What emerged from this process was a more powerful server with the express mission of supporting faculty, staff, and student academic activities, hence its name: the Academic server. More...

Do You Want to be Facebook Friends? - Maureen Scoones
You watch your kids do it and you may even know of some friends who say they have Facebook pages for their pets (no, my two cats live a comfy life out of the spotlight). Are you curious, but just don't know where to begin?
ITS subscribes to an online training library, Lynda.com, that contains over 1000 video tutorials you can access 24 hours a day, seven days a week. This month's releases include Up and Running With Facebook. If you are thinking a Twitter handle is more your style, there is a video tutorial for that too! Contact Maureen Scoones (mscoones@hamilton.edu, x4178) for an account.
