Family Weekend

October 28, 2012

Once a year, the campus is flooded with parents and other family members that come to see what we’ve been up to here on the Hill!  Even if your parents can’t make it, there is so much going on this weekend that it’s still fun for everyone!  My parents did get a chance this year to make the 4-and-a-half-hour drive to see me up at school.

It was so nice to have them here.  Although I just saw them a few weeks ago for Fall Break, it’s always the best to get a big hug and free food from them.  One of the weirdest parts of coming to college is not seeing your family for the majority of the year.  So, whenever I get a chance to spend time with them, I love it.

My parents arrived Friday night around dinner and we got to do so many awesome things.  Most importantly, of course, we went out to a lot of different places to eat.  I love to try all of the different restaurants around campus.  This time, I took my parents to Mitsuba and Bella Cucina, both located in New Hartford.  Both of these places were super good!  Mitsuba has great sushi, including a tasty sweet potato roll, while Bella Cucina serves up some delicious Italian food.

Other than going out to eat, we did a lot of stuff on and off campus.  We went to Clinton Pottery for the first time.  They make all handmade pottery right on site, and my parents fell in love with their famous mugs.  We also ventured to the Cider Mill, of course, to enjoy some donuts.  While we were there, the apple press was running.  It was awesome to see this 100-year-old machine pressing apples into the Mill’s mouth-watering cider.   On campus, I took my parents to see the Wellin Gallery and they both enjoyed it very much.  Additionally, I gave them a tour of some of the places that I frequent on campus, including the labs that I have class in this semester.  I got to show them some of the specimens that we’ve been working with.  I don’t think they were as excited as I was, but it was still awesome to show them what I’ve been up to.

The highlight of my weekend was going to the Outreach Adventure slideshow on Saturday.  Outreach Adventure is a freshman pre-orientation service program that I am a leader for.  I love OA and it was so much fun to show my parents how I spent the additional three weeks that I was at school before classes started.  I’ll talk more about OA in a separate journal post because there is so much to say about it, but it is one of my favorite parts of Hamilton!

It was sad to see my parents go, but I’m so glad that I got to spend some quality time with them.  I’ll admit, I still get homesick even as a junior, so whenever I get to see my family it's always a pleasure.  Mom and Dad, I know you read this so I just wanted to say I love you!
