Citizenship Information

The Process

The road to becoming a United States citizen can be a lengthy, complicated and expensive one for many immigrants and refugees. The entire process may take 6-9 months or longer and costs $390. There are many steps along the way:

 

  1. Complete the Application for Naturalization (N-400) Form
  2. Acquire official fingerprints for identification purposes
  3. Prepare for the Naturalization Interview
  4. Complete your Naturalization Interview with an INS Officer
  5. Attend the Naturalization Oath Ceremony to be sworn in as a United States citizen
  6. Obtain a copy of the Certificate of Citizenship
  7. Men must register with the Selective Service


The Requirements

The general requirements for naturalization, according to the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Service, include:
  • a period of continuous residence and physical presence in the United States;
  • residence in a particular USCIS District prior to filing;
  • an ability to read, write, and speak English;
  • a knowledge and understanding of U.S. history and government;
  • good moral character;
  • attachment to the principles of the U.S. Constitution; and,
  • favorable disposition toward the United States.

The 100 Questions

INS Officers may ask a Naturalization candidate several questions about United States civics and history from a list of 100 most frequently asked questions. Naturalization candidates, your learners, practice answering these 100 questions in order to prepare for their INS Interview.
