The Adult Learning Center at MVRCR provides English education to immigrants and refugees in the Utica area. The Center has ten ESOL classrooms at varying levels, which are staffed by experienced ESOL teachers from the Utica City School District. Project SHINE coaches assist in one of these classrooms throughout the semester. Coaches provide a valuable service by offering individualized attention to learners. Coaches work on a variety of topics ranging from beginning English (alphabet and phonics) to more advanced writing and speaking. A small tutoring class for both English and Citizenship began at the MVLA office in Spring of 2005 and quickly expanded to a teacher-supported class with funds from the Utica City School District and the help of the Adult Learning Center. This class meets at 5:30-8pm on the second floor of the Refugee Center and affords an intimate setting and a chance for tutors to sharpen their tutoring skills and form lasting relationships. |
