Professor Alan Cafruny’s view on the European crisis is, as he admits, controversial. He states that the European Union is no longer a union of European prosperity, but merely a monetary union driving Europe into recession and inflation. After World War II, the EU pursued two projects of integration, post-war settlement project and neoliberal project; the latter led to the empowerment of capital over labor, and intentional restructuring of society and strategic austerity by the “elite” nations. Germany and France control the EU, but how much can the people take? Italy’s half-coup-d'etat, Bulgaria’s violent protests and a massive movement in Spain all indicate that the EU is failing. The Golden Age of Europe is over.
