Alexander Shaler, born 19 March 1827 in Haddam, CT and died 28 December 1911 in New York, NY, was a Civil War Union Colonel, later raised in rank to Brigadier General, and decorated with the Congressional Medal of Honor for his service at the battle of Chancellorsville; post-war he served as a fire commissioner, Major General in the N.Y. National Guard, and President of the NRA
Letters from Alexander Shaler to J.J. Tompkins regarding recollections of events immediately following the attack on Ft. Sumpter while they were in New York, NY and later a meeting in Washington, DC to be included in Alexander Shaler's entry in Brevet Major-General St. Clair A. Mulholland's The History of the Military Order of the Congress Medal of Honor Legion. Also included is a circular intended to publicize the book.
