William Sloane, Jr. was born on 13 March 1910 in Glasgow, Scotland and died on 3 November 1977. He attended Hamilton College (A.B., 1932) and Columbia University (A.M. and Ph.D.) Sloane was a member of the faculties of Hamilton College, St. Francis College, Russell Sage College, and for 30 years, Professor of English at Dickinson College. At Dickinson he held the Martha P. Sellers Chair in English and served as the department chair from 1954 - 6. In 1958 he was a Folger Shakespeare Library Fellow. Dr. Sloane is the author of "Children's Books in England and America in the 17th Century"
Note: The collection was deposited in the Hamilton College Library in 1942 by William Sloane, who requested that the contents of the collection remain sealed in a box until the year 2000. The Hamilton College Archives Staff opened the box on 23 May 2001.Contains correspondences and other memorabilia of William Sloane, Jr. The majority of the professional correspondences concern Sloane's post-baccalaureate experience in obtaining a teaching position c. 1934, following the completion of his Master's degree. Also included are personal and professional correspondences with Hamilton College faculty, administrators, and alumni, 1934 - 40, and his freshman year journals.
