Library Information Systems

Overview

The Library Information Systems Department has overall responsibility for maintaining the computer systems used by both library staff and library patrons. We work with the library staff to create better use of computing technologies in their work and in meeting the needs of our patrons.  We  also work closely with ITS and other college departments on integrated, campus-wide systems projects.

The department maintains computer hardware and software for 34 public PCs, 49 staff computers and 10 networked printers in the Library and its branches.  We manage hardware and software for the library's integrated library system and online catalog (ALEX) together with our digital collections and web site.

Systems staff are on duty Monday through Friday 8:00AM - 4:30PM. We can be reached at 859-4487 or 859-4493. If we are not available, please leave a brief message and a contact phone number.

Managed Systems

  • ALEX, the online catalog -- ALEX is the local instance of the ExLibris Group's Voyager integrated library system. It is hosted on a Sun Fire 880 server, with 8-way 1.2GHz processors and 16GB RAM, Solaris 10 operating system and Oracle 10g database software.
  • EZProxy - EZProxy is software that gives Hamilton College ID holders permission to use any of the library's user-restricted databases from off campus locations around the world. EZProxy is hosted on a Windows 2003 server.
  • CONTENTdm - The Library is loading local digital collections into a new storage, delivery and management system.  A new web-based interface is forthcoming.
  • Hamilton College Library Digital Collections -- Locally-developed by the systems staff to manage objects digitized from the Library's Special Collections, these collections are hosted on a Windows 2003 server and delivered with PHP scripts. The digital objects are managed by Fedora and any content that is tagged in TEI is indexed for searching purposes in eXist.
