From the Editor - Maureen Scoones

This month, a special edition of the newsletter! Library and Information Technology Services is launching our "You Are the Target" campaign.

You Are the Target

You are always the target, 365 days a year! Everyone has a role in protecting the confidential and sensitive information contained in Hamilton's electronic systems and on your own personal devices. In the coming days and weeks, we will be alerting you to behaviors that may make you more vulnerable to data, identity, and device theft and compromised accounts.

Dos and Don'ts in the Digital Age

Or don'ts and dos as the case may be. This list is by no means exhaustive, but merely a starting point to get everyone to be more conscious of their behaviors.

  • Click on suspicious looking links in an email message
  • Open attachments from people you don't know
  • Use a computer that is infected with a virus
  • Give out your password to any other individual either in person or online
  • Leave your laptop or other mobile device unattended
  • Leave yourself logged in on a public computer and walk away (e.g. in a classroom or public lab)
  • Send/receive sensitive information when on an open wi-fi network

  • Protect ALL devices that you connect to the Internet by using up-to-date software
  • Pay attention to current threats such as the recently reported Heartbleed Bug and how you can protect yourself
  • Use anti-virus software
  • Use secure wireless networks, even when home
  • Use strong passwords on ALL of your devices
  • Know your Apps and understand what data the app can access on your device before you download
  • Make a backup of your data
